Five Reasons Why Your Child Should Play Hockey

You may have heard that hockey is such a dangerous game; that people get hurt and that your child should never get involved in it. But this could not be further than the truth. People get hurt in any sport. In fact, people get hurt in any situation.

Hockey is no different from any other sport. If anything, your child stands to learn many different things from the sport and these lessons will benefit him in the future when he or she starts to deal with the real world alone.

• Strength – If there is anything that a child will build by playing hockey, it's his or her physical strength. No other sport in the world can come quite close to the physical demands of hockey, except maybe for American Football. But even they get to stand around and make short plays. In hockey, the action is almost non-stop when the whistle blows and the speed is incredible. A child playing this game will develop a newfound physical strength that he or she never knew before.

• Health – Because of the many exercises and activities that hockey training offers, a child will also learn that health is wealth. This is because to be good at the sport, one has to be quite fit. So what does a child learn? That exercise is good and that that getting into all sorts of vices can be damaging. This is a very important lesson that can veer a child away from extracurricular activities like drinking, smoking and even away from drugs. Hockey is a great sport to help keep a child's focus on the game and on health as well.

• Safety - A parent's number one concern is child safety. No, ironic as it may seem, hockey can teach a valuable lesson in safety. In fact, it is one of the only sports in the world where the players are covered from head to foot in safety gear and padding. This will teach a child that being safe in any situation is important and this is a lesson he or she can carry over the years.

• Focus – By developing a child's focus to play, work hard, work together with others, and win, it will help prepare that child's future in the real world. Hockey is a sport that can teach these values to children. Sure it all may seem like play when looking at the sport in all its generality. But a closer look will show you that a child will learn a whole lot more just by being involved with the sport and with the people who play it, like teammates, the coach, etc.

• Teamwork – A child can also develop some very valuable social skills while being on the rink with other children. He or she might make new friends while training and playing. But more important than that, even though a child may not know everyone involved, he or she can learn how to cooperate with people no matter who they are. This is the kind of teamwork lesson that a child can take with him or her into the real world, in school, college, and eventually in the workplace and even at home.
